The verdict
Ed Tuttle designed Amanjena, which opened in 2000 as Aman's first hotel in Africa: rose-coloured pavilions set around a great central basin, among olive groves and palms on the edge of the Palmeraie. Its geometry recalls the Menara gardens and the Alhambra, and nothing about it is hurried. It holds two MICHELIN Keys. It is the calmest way to do Marrakech — the medina is a drive away, not outside the door.
Couples who want quiet, space and the Aman way of doing things, with the city within reach.
You want to walk into the souks: the medina is a car ride away.
Take breakfast by the basin, when the arcades reflect in still water — it is the image the whole place is built around.
The rooms
Thirty-two pavilions and seven larger maisons, some of them with private pools, all in the same rose plaster, with domed ceilings and fireplaces.
The setting
Outside the city, near the Palmeraie, in grounds of olive trees and palms laid out around the central basin.
The food
Restaurants and terraces set around the basin and the gardens.
Getting there
Around 20 minutes by car from the airport and from the medina.
Good to know
Some of the maisons have their own pools and staff — worth it for families or longer stays.
