The verdict
Commissioned by King Mohammed VI and opened in 2010, the Royal Mansour is a small walled town of 53 private riads on five hectares, built as a showcase of Moroccan craft — zellige, carved cedar, sculpted plaster — at a level almost nowhere else attempts. Staff move through underground passages, so the lanes between the riads stay quiet. It holds two MICHELIN Keys. It is the most extravagant stay in the city, and priced like it.
A private house with its own courtyard in the old city, and service that anticipates rather than waits.
You want a hotel you can afford to stay in for a week — or the bustle of a lobby: this place is built around privacy.
Visit the spa even if you are not booked for a treatment: its white latticework atrium is one of the most striking rooms in Marrakech.
The rooms
Fifty-three riads rather than rooms, each a private house of several floors arranged around its own courtyard, with the craftsmanship carried into every surface.
The setting
Within the old city walls, a few minutes' walk from Jemaa el-Fna, on a five-hectare estate of gardens and passageways that feels like a medina of its own.
The food
Yannick Alléno oversees the restaurants, among them La Grande Table Marocaine.
Getting there
About 15 minutes by car from Marrakech-Menara airport; the hotel arranges transfers.
Good to know
The same group runs hotels in Casablanca and at Tamuda Bay; make sure you are booking Marrakech.
