Marrakech: good to know

Should I stay in the medina or outside Marrakech?

Inside the medina for atmosphere and walking everywhere; in the Palmeraie or on the Agafay for space and quiet; in the High Atlas for mountains and cool air. Many people spend two or three nights in the medina and the rest outside.

What is the best hotel in Marrakech?

La Mamounia, with three MICHELIN Keys and eight hectares of gardens inside the city walls, is the classic answer. The Royal Mansour is the most extravagant, and El Fenn the most characterful in the medina.

Is it worth staying in the desert near Marrakech?

The Agafay is not the Sahara — it is a stone desert of bare hills — but it is less than an hour away and very beautiful at sunset. One or two nights at a camp like Inara are the easiest way to add the desert to a city trip.

How far is the High Atlas from Marrakech?

About an hour by car to Asni and the Imlil valley, at the foot of Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak. Kasbah Tamadot, above Asni, is the reference hotel there.

When is the best time to visit Marrakech?

March to May and October to November. Winter is sunny but nights are cold, and July and August are very hot. Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year; hotels keep serving throughout.
