The verdict
Eighteen safari tents on the Agafay, the stone desert less than an hour from Marrakech, facing the High Atlas. Each has a king bed, a sitting room, its own bathroom with a hot shower and a wood-burning stove for cold desert nights, with interiors by Vincent Jaquet. It is the easiest way to see the desert without a long drive south — one or two nights between the medina and the mountains.
One or two nights of desert silence, stars and firelight, close enough to combine with a riad in the city.
You want a hotel's range of services, or reliable wifi.
Arrive in the afternoon: the light turns the hills copper before sunset, and the Atlas is often snow-capped from winter into spring.
The rooms
Eighteen tents with king beds, sitting rooms and en-suite bathrooms, warmed by wood-burning stoves.
The setting
On the Agafay, a rocky desert of bare hills south-west of Marrakech, with the High Atlas along the horizon.
The food
A restaurant serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, with Moroccan specialities; dinners by the fire.
Getting there
Less than an hour by car from Marrakech; the camp arranges transfers.
Good to know
There are two pools. Desert nights are cold from November to March even when days are warm.
