The verdict
A ring of logs floating on the Lule River, in the village of Harads, with an open cold bath at its centre and cabins on the water and among the trees. The spa ritual — sauna, steam, the ice-cold plunge — is the reason to come, followed by an eight-course dinner of local game and fish. One MICHELIN Key; in winter the river freezes around it.
A spa ritual, the silence of a frozen river and the northern lights overhead.
You want activity from dawn to dusk: the point here is to slow down.
Book a water cabin, and time the cold plunge for the blue hour in the afternoon, when the light goes rose and gold.
The rooms
Twelve cabins, some floating on the river and some on the bank among the pines, simply furnished in pale wood with large windows.
The setting
On the Lule River at Harads, just south of the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland, a few minutes from Treehotel.
The food
A floating restaurant with a set dinner of eight courses built around local game and fish.
Getting there
About an hour by car from Luleå airport, which has flights from Stockholm; there is also a night train from Stockholm to Luleå.
Good to know
Snowshoeing, dog-sledding and aurora evenings in winter; the midnight sun and river swims in summer.
