The verdict
Built again every winter since 1989 from blocks of ice cut from the Torne River, with suites carved by artists from around the world, and open from December to April. Icehotel 365 keeps a smaller set of ice suites and an ice bar cold all year, and warm rooms and cabins wait for the rest of the night. Selected by the MICHELIN Guide, without a Key.
One night in the ice and the rest of the trip in a warm room, with the aurora over Jukkasjärvi.
You dislike the cold or crowds of day visitors: the ice halls are also a sight.
Book one night in an art suite and the others in a warm room or cabin, and take the evening tour of the ice before the day visitors come back.
The rooms
Ice rooms and art suites at −5 °C with reindeer skins and expedition sleeping bags; warm hotel rooms and chalets for the other nights.
The setting
In the village of Jukkasjärvi on the Torne River, about fifteen minutes from Kiruna, well north of the Arctic Circle.
The food
Three restaurants cooking the flavours of Jukkasjärvi — reindeer, char, lingonberries — and dinners served on plates of ice.
Getting there
About fifteen minutes by car from Kiruna airport, which has flights from Stockholm; the night train from Stockholm also reaches Kiruna.
Good to know
The seasonal ice hotel opens in December and melts in spring; Icehotel 365 is open all year.
