The verdict
A 13th-century estate near Siena that was once a healing stop for medieval pilgrims and is now one of the most soulful stays in Tuscany. 22 individually designed suites, extraordinary gardens, a 300-acre organic farm with its own dairy, bees and alpacas — and the Michelin-starred Saporium, where nearly everything on the plate is grown or raised on the estate. Deeply personal, green and genuinely farm-to-table, not as a slogan.
Travellers who want gardens, farm-to-table food and a soulful, design-led Tuscan estate near Siena.
You want a big-view hilltop or a beach — this is an inland garden estate, lush rather than panoramic.
Book a garden pavilion or pool house over a main-villa room, and eat at Saporium — ask to see the farm and gardens the ingredients come from.
The rooms
22 individually designed suites and rooms spread across the restored 12th-century villa, secluded garden pavilions and private pool houses — each dressed with antiques, bespoke pieces and layered detail. No two are alike; the garden pavilions are the quietest.
The setting
On a 300-acre organic estate near Chiusdino, in the hills west of Siena — market gardens, herb gardens, orchards, vineyards, forest, a dairy and free-roaming animals. It's inland and green rather than a big-view hilltop, and the gardens themselves are the destination.
The food
Saporium is the estate's Michelin-starred restaurant, a true farm-to-plate kitchen built almost entirely on what's grown, milked and raised on site — cheese and yogurt from the dairy, produce from the gardens. There are more relaxed options too, but Saporium is the reason to come hungry.
Getting there
About 40 minutes from Siena and 1h15 from Florence airport, down country roads. A car is essential — the estate sits on its own in the Colline Senesi.
Good to know
A member of Leading Hotels of the World, and very green and garden-focused — wonderful for slow days on the estate. Best in late spring to early autumn when the gardens and farm are at their peak.
