The verdict
A guest house in the historic centre of Maó, dressed with years of hunted-down antiques by Cristine Bedfor and the decorator Lorenzo Castillo, with a secret garden, a stone-lined pool and a kitchen that cooks the island's produce. It holds a MICHELIN Key and is the most characterful way to stay in Maó on foot.
Couples who want Maó's harbour, market and restaurants on foot and a house full of personality to come back to.
You want the countryside or the sea from your window: it is a townhouse in the middle of Maó.
Have lunch in the garden between two beach mornings, and walk down to the harbour at dusk, when the old town cools off.
The rooms
Rooms spread across the house, each decorated differently with antiques, patterned fabrics and colour, some with a terrace or balcony. They are town-house sized: characterful rather than vast.
The setting
In the historic centre of Maó, a few minutes' walk from the Mercat de Sa Plaça, the churches and the steps down to one of the Mediterranean's largest natural harbours. Behind the facades is a garden with a pool, the house's refuge in summer.
The food
La Cocina de Cristine, led by the chef Pau Sintes, serves breakfast, lunch by the pool and dinner, built around Menorcan producers. Maó's restaurants and the harbourside are on the doorstep.
Getting there
About 10 minutes from Menorca airport. You do not need a car in Maó; parking can be arranged for a fee.
Good to know
Children are welcome, and small dogs up to 8 kg are accepted for a fee. There is a small gym. The hotel closes in January and February.
