The verdict
Agustín Ibarra, owner of the Café Inglés, opened this hotel on 27 July 1886 on what was then the Calle del Lobo, and it is the oldest hotel in Madrid still working. After almost five years of restoration it reopened in 2018 with 48 rooms and Art Deco interiors by the Rockwell Group. It holds a MICHELIN Key and sits in the Barrio de las Letras, the literary quarter of Cervantes and Lope de Vega.
A central, walkable base with character, between the Puerta del Sol and the museums.
You want a pool or a garden: this is a town-centre hotel.
Keep an evening for the bar at street level, then walk the Barrio de las Letras for tapas.
The rooms
Forty-eight rooms with hardwood floors, leather panelling and Art Deco details in bronze and glass.
The setting
On Calle Echegaray in the Barrio de las Letras, about 300 metres from the Puerta del Sol and a short walk from the Prado.
The food
Casa Lobo and the bar-lounge serve from morning to late, with tapas at the heart of the menu.
Getting there
About 25 minutes by taxi from the airport; Sol metro and Atocha station are within walking distance.
Good to know
The hotel is a member of The Leading Hotels of the World.
