The verdict
Alfonso XIII opened the Ritz in 1910, across the road from the Prado, and for a century it was where Madrid's society met. It closed for three years and reopened in April 2021, restored by the architect Rafael de La-Hoz with interiors by the Paris studio Gilles & Boissier. It holds three MICHELIN Keys — one of five hotels in Spain to do so — and it is the grandest address in the city.
A Belle Époque grand hotel with the Prado, the Thyssen and the Retiro on the doorstep.
You want a small, quiet house: with 153 rooms and suites and a busy Palm Court, this is a grand hotel in the full sense.
Book afternoon tea in the Palm Court under its glass canopy, and ask for a room on the Prado side of the building.
The rooms
One hundred rooms and 53 suites, from rooms over the inner courtyard to suites looking across the Prado and the Plaza de la Lealtad.
The setting
On the Plaza de la Lealtad, between the Prado and the Paseo del Prado, with the Thyssen-Bornemisza and the Retiro a few minutes' walk away. The hotel has its own garden.
The food
Deessa, Quique Dacosta's restaurant overlooking the garden, holds two MICHELIN stars. The Palm Court serves all day and afternoon tea under a glass canopy.
Getting there
About 25 minutes by taxi from Madrid-Barajas airport; Atocha station is a 15-minute walk.
Good to know
Deessa has a hidden chef's table. Rooms on the Prado side are the ones to ask for.
