The verdict
A five-star member of The Leading Hotels of the World at the heart of Camiral, A Quinta do Lago Resort, the resort once known as PGA Catalunya, whose Stadium Course will host the 2031 Ryder Cup. Some 140 rooms dressed by Lázaro Rosa-Violán, a spa and six places to eat, six kilometres from Girona airport: the most complete golf hotel in the north of Spain, and a resort rather than a hideaway.
Golfers who want a championship course at the door, and couples or families who want a spa, pools and Girona or the coast within half an hour.
You want an intimate house or the sea outside the window: this is a large resort in pine woods, about 30 minutes from the nearest beach.
Book the Stadium Course tee time when you book the room — it is the round everyone comes for — and ask for a Superior Deluxe, whose balcony faces the Tour Course and the Pyrenees.
The rooms
Around 140 rooms and suites, from 32 m² Deluxe rooms to duplex suites and a 154 m² presidential suite, plus 72 m² family rooms with two bathrooms. Many have a terrace over the pool, the gardens or the Tour Course, with the Pyrenees on the horizon on clear days. The interiors are warm and residential rather than corporate.
The setting
In Caldes de Malavella, a spa town in the Selva county south of Girona, inside a resort of pine and cork-oak woods with two courses: the Stadium, regularly ranked among the best in Spain and chosen for the 2031 Ryder Cup, and the gentler Tour. Girona's old town is about 20 minutes away, and the coast at Sant Feliu de Guíxols and S'Agaró about 30.
The food
Six places to eat and drink: Origin, the signature restaurant, Camiral Bistro, the Club Café by the course, the Lounge Bar, Bella's and a pool bar. Girona, with some of Catalonia's best restaurants, is close enough for dinner.
Getting there
Six kilometres from Girona–Costa Brava airport and about 70 minutes from Barcelona airport. A car is useful for the coast and for Girona; parking is free.
Good to know
Families are welcome, and there are family rooms. The resort also holds a second hotel, LaVida, and holiday homes, so the grounds are shared with more than hotel guests. The spa has thermal baths, treatments, yoga and a gym; the outdoor pool is 20 metres long.
