The verdict

Fifteen rooms inside the 19th-century fortress on the Sants Metges hill above Girona, which the Roca brothers of El Celler de Can Roca have turned into a restaurant with a MICHELIN star, a Catalan dining room, a distillery and a cellar of some 80,000 bottles. It holds two MICHELIN Keys, up from one in 2025, and the view runs all the way round, over Girona and the Empordà plain to the Pyrenees.

Best for

Food lovers who want a Roca dinner without a drive home, and a calm base ten minutes from Girona.

Skip if

You want the sea or a town at the door: this is a hilltop with a view, and you will drive to both.

Insider tip

Reserve the Esperit Roca restaurant when you book the room, not after, and take breakfast on the terrace, while the plain below is still in mist.

The rooms

Fifteen rooms built in natural materials — wood floors, cork ceilings, linen, raffia — with large windows onto the view, balconies and free-standing baths. One junior suite has its own garden; a duplex suite has a quiet balcony.

The setting

On the Sants Metges hill at Sant Julià de Ramis, about ten kilometres north of Girona, within the walls of a military fortress built at the end of the 19th century. The castle holds the two restaurants, the distillery, an exhibition and gardens; the hotel looks across the Girona plain to the Empordà and the mountains.

The food

Esperit Roca reinterprets the classics of El Celler de Can Roca and holds a MICHELIN star; Fontané cooks traditional Catalan food. Breakfast is served with the panorama. The distillery makes the brothers' gin, brandy and liqueurs.

Getting there

About 15 minutes from Girona station, where high-speed trains from Barcelona take under 40 minutes, and 25 from Girona airport. A car is useful; Figueres is about 25 minutes north.

Good to know

A seasonal L-shaped pool, a gym and a spa with a private circuit and treatments. The restaurants draw outside guests, so the castle is busier at mealtimes than fifteen rooms would suggest.
