The verdict
Frank Gehry's titanium-and-steel hotel for the Marqués de Riscal winery, opened in October 2006 among the vines below the medieval village of Elciego, with 61 rooms, ten of them suites, a Caudalie wine spa and a MICHELIN-starred restaurant. It holds a MICHELIN Key. As architecture it is unmatched in Spain's wine country; as a hotel it is a larger, more corporate stay than the estates around it.

You want an intimate house with a personal welcome: this is a Marriott property with 61 rooms and plenty of day visitors to the winery.
Pay for a room in the Gehry building rather than the spa wing if the architecture is the point, and book a winery visit for the morning, before the day groups arrive.
The rooms
Sixty-one rooms, ten of them suites, split between the Gehry building and a spa wing connected to it by a glass bridge. Many have angled window seats looking over the valley, and the titanium canopies frame the views from inside.
The setting
The hotel rises between the vineyards and the medieval village of Elciego, in the heart of Rioja Alavesa. Beside it stands the winery's original headquarters, designed in 1858 by the architect Ricardo Bellsola — the old building and Gehry's new one read as a single estate.
The food
The gastronomic restaurant, advised by Francis Paniego, holds a MICHELIN star. There is also 1860 Tradición, for classic Rioja cooking, and a wine bar and bistro. The Marqués de Riscal winery runs tours and tastings next door.
Getting there
Elciego is a short drive from Laguardia and about half an hour from Logroño. A car makes sense in Rioja, where the wineries, Haro's station district and the Vivanco wine museum in Briones are spread across the valley.
Good to know
The Spa Vinothérapie Caudalie uses grape-based treatments and has an indoor pool, a hammam and a Finnish sauna. The hotel is part of Marriott's Luxury Collection. The Key is from the Guide's 2026 selection.
