The verdict
A 12th-century Romanesque abbey on the Duero, restored into a five-star hotel of 27 rooms and three suites and set inside a working wine estate that holds its own protected designation of origin — granted by the European Commission, separate from the Ribera del Duero DO next door. It has three MICHELIN Keys, the Guide's highest distinction, and a MICHELIN-starred restaurant in the monks' refectory. It is the most complete wine estate hotel in Spain.
Wine travellers who want to sleep inside the estate that makes the wine, with a serious table and nothing to organise.
You want a village or a town on foot: the abbey stands alone among its vines, and the price sits at the very top of Spain.
Book Refectorio when you book the room, and keep a daylight hour for the cloister and the church — the abbey is the reason to come, not just the setting.
The rooms
Twenty-seven rooms and three suites inside the restored abbey, most of them looking out over the vineyards. Interiors are calm and classical rather than showy; the draw is the architecture around them. Service is built around a 24-hour butler, and there is a pillow menu.
The setting
The abbey sits beside the N-122 at Sardón de Duero, on the stretch of the river known for some of Spain's most celebrated estates. The monastery was founded in the 12th century, and its church, cloister and refectory survive. Around it lie the estate's vineyards and gardens, and its art collection has recently added a work by Eduardo Chillida.
The food
Refectorio, the gastronomic restaurant in the former refectory, holds a MICHELIN star and cooks the territory. Vinoteca is a contemporary Castilian tavern built on market and garden produce, Calicata is a terroir bar, and Hospedería covers comfort food and cocktails. The winery, built in 1996 and run by winemaker Ángel Anocíbar, offers visits and tastings.
Getting there
About 30 km east of Valladolid, which is around an hour from Madrid by high-speed train, and roughly 25 km from Peñafiel and its castle. A car is useful for the wider Duero, though the estate is built to be stayed in.
Good to know
The estate's wines carry their own protected designation of origin rather than the Ribera del Duero DO, which is why the labels read Abadía Retuerta. There is a spa, the Santuario Wellness & Spa, and restaurants open to non-residents. This is a destination hotel, priced accordingly.
