The verdict
Chalets and treehouses spread through forty hectares of alpine park at 1,400 m in Avelengo, above Merano, around a lake of 5,800 m² that holds the Texel peaks. Alex and Claudia Meister, the fourth generation of a Merano hotel family, built the lodges in timber felled by the phases of the moon; each has its own sauna and hot tub, breakfast is brought to your door, and the spa has a hot tub in the middle of the lake. Couples who want a lodge of their own in the woods, with the spa and the lake a short walk away.
You travel with young children: the hotel recommends stays from the age of twelve, and the minimum stay is three nights.
Take the Starlight Treehouse, 92 m² with a telescope, an outdoor sauna and a hot tub, and keep an evening free for the stars.

The setting
At 1,400 m in Avelengo (Hafling), a few kilometres above Merano, in a forty-hectare alpine park with a lake that reflects the Texel peaks. The resort is closed to anyone without a booking.
The food
Breakfast is served in your lodge; the clubhouse restaurant cooks with vegetables and herbs from four hectares tended by the grower Harald Gasser.
Getting there
Merano station is the nearest, a taxi ride down the hill; Bolzano station and airport are further. A car is useful for the valleys.
Good to know
The spa has an indoor pool by an open fire that runs outside, a heated outdoor pool and the hot tub in the lake. Open from April to early November and from late November to February; minimum stay three nights.
