The verdict
A hunting lodge built in 1624 for the lords of the castle next door, on a ledge of rock above Merano, with the Adige valley below and the Texel peaks opposite. The Ortner family took it on in 1954 and has since bought back the castle itself, now called Paternum. Twenty suites, a garden of 50,000 m², a spa that makes its own products and Prezioso, where Egon Heiss holds a MICHELIN Star and a Green Star. Two MICHELIN Keys.
Couples who want a small house, the whole valley at their feet and a serious dinner.
You are coming in winter: the house closes from early November to mid-April.
Ask for the Adlerhorst, the tower suite with its own rooftop terrace, and walk twenty minutes to the 135 m waterfall nearby, the highest in South Tyrol.
The rooms
Twenty rooms and suites, from 28 m² to the 70 m² Suite Royale, with bathrooms in red Verona marble; the Adlerhorst, in the tower, has an 18 m² terrace on the roof.
The setting
On a rock ledge above Merano, at the end of five kilometres of mountain road, in a 50,000 m² garden that looks over the Adige valley to the Texel Group. Merano is fifteen minutes away by car.
The food
Prezioso, Egon Heiss's restaurant, with one MICHELIN Star and a Green Star, open Tuesday to Saturday in the evening; the Orangerie serves the five-course half-board dinner.
Getting there
About 30 minutes from Bolzano airport and an hour and a half from Innsbruck or Verona; by train to Merano, then a transfer up the hill.
Good to know
The Alchemistic Healing Spa makes its own products and uses no packaged cosmetics, and there is a heated outdoor pool. Open mid-April to early November; children are welcome. A Relais & Châteaux member.
