The verdict
A mountain house at 1,622 m above the Sarntal, the valley north of Bolzano, which the brother and sister Heinrich and Gisela Schneider took over from their parents in 1998. He cooks and she runs the house and the wine; their restaurant won its first Star in 2008 and its second in 2017, and holds two MICHELIN Stars and a Green Star. Upstairs there are eight rooms and three suites, and a hot tub on the roof that faces the Dolomites. One MICHELIN Key.
A dinner worth the mountain road, and a quiet night after it.
You want a big spa or a village: it is a small house high above a quiet valley, and the restaurant is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
Plan the stay around a dinner between Tuesday and Saturday, and walk the seventy-five minutes up to the Stoanernen Mandln, the stone figures on the ridge at 2,003 m.
The rooms
Eight rooms and three suites, from the Superior and Design rooms to the Pine Studio Deluxe and the Panorama Suite, with views over the valley.
The setting
At 1,622 m at Auen (Prati), above Sarentino in the Sarntal; Bolzano is about half an hour by car and Merano about an hour.
The food
Terra, Heinrich Schneider's restaurant, with two MICHELIN Stars and a Green Star: one tasting menu at dinner, 7 to 9 pm, closed Sunday and Monday. Gisela Schneider, who holds the WSET Diploma, looks after the wine.
Getting there
Bolzano airport and station are 26 km away. The Reinswald ski area is a 25-minute drive.
Good to know
The spa is small: a hay steam bath, a Finnish sauna, a relaxation room and the rooftop hot tub at 35°C. The house closes between seasons, in late autumn and in spring. A Relais & Châteaux member.
