The verdict
A manor house of the 15th century, built like a small castle at 880 m in Villanders, above Klausen and the Eisack valley; it was the courthouse before it became a hotel. Elisabeth Rabensteiner took it over at twenty. Its twelve suites have spruce floors a hundred years old, clay-plastered walls and basins of Siusi basalt, and more than 800 wines wait in a Gothic vault. One MICHELIN Key.
Food and wine people who want a small historic house, with the Dolomites across the valley.
You want a spa or a pool: there is a stone-pine sauna, and that is all.
Book La Lumosa, René Tschager's four tables, when you book the room; it is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
The rooms
Twelve suites named after the lords of Neuhaus, the minnesinger Oswald von Wolkenstein and the artists and travellers linked to the house, with century-old spruce floors, clay-plastered walls and basins of Siusi basalt.
The setting
At 880 m in the village of Villanders, above Klausen in the Eisack valley, looking towards the Odle of Val di Funes, the Sass de Putia and the peaks of the Alpe di Siusi.
The food
The chef René Tschager cooks at La Lumosa, four tables and a tasting menu in the evening, and at Stain, à la carte at lunch and dinner, with lamb from the house's own flock of Villnöss sheep; hotel guests can take a five-course dinner in the old courthouse Stube.
Getting there
Klausen and Brixen are the nearest stations, and the hotel runs a free shuttle from them and from Bolzano airport; by car, leave the A22 at Klausen.
Good to know
More than 800 wines are kept in the Gothic cellar. The house is small and led by its restaurants.
