The verdict
A long, low building of wood and glass under a grass roof, designed by Matteo Thun and finished in 2003 at 1,500 m on the Vigiljoch above Lana, where no road goes: guests come up by cable car. Forty-one rooms face either the Dolomites or the forest, each with a clay wall heated from inside; there is a 1,200 m² spa, and Stube Ida keeps the hundred-year-old tiled stove of the mountain inn that stood here first. One MICHELIN Key.
Walkers, and anyone who wants a mountain without cars, with Lana and Merano below.
You want to drive to the door: the only way up is the cable car.
Ask for a room facing the Dolomites for the morning sun, and book the seven-course menu at Restaurant 1500, served on Thursdays and Fridays.
