The verdict
Richard Branson's estate of some 500 hectares between the Tramuntana and the sea near Banyalbufar, where a 16th-century finca opened in 2023 as a Virgin Limited Edition hotel of twenty-seven rooms and suites, with three private villas on the land. It holds a MICHELIN Key and has the most dramatic setting of any hotel in Mallorca.
Couples and small groups who want the Tramuntana at its wildest, a pool on a historic terrace and nothing to do but walk and eat.
You want a village or a beach on foot: this is a remote estate on the mountain coast, and it is priced accordingly.
Walk the estate's paths down towards the sea in the morning, and book dinner on the terrace for sunset over the water.
The rooms
Twenty-seven rooms and suites in the finca and its old outbuildings, with beams, local fabrics and views of the mountains or the sea; three villas, of four and five bedrooms, can be booked privately.
The setting
On the north-west coast between Banyalbufar and the sea, inside the UNESCO-listed Serra de Tramuntana, on an estate of terraces, olive groves and cliffs. The main house dates from the 1500s; the old olive press, the tafona, survives.
The food
Two restaurants cook Mallorcan and Mediterranean food with produce from the estate and the island, on terraces facing the sea.
Getting there
About 40 minutes by car from Palma airport on the mountain road. A car is useful; the drive is part of the experience.
Good to know
A pool on the historic terrace, spa treatment rooms and bikes. It is small and very quiet; book well ahead for summer.
