The verdict
Treehouses in chicozapote wood, lifted on pillars over 36 hectares of forest on the shore of Bacalar's Lagoon of Seven Colours, far down the peninsula towards Belize. The Mexican architect Frida Escobedo designed the villas and the common buildings, completed in 2023, and 90 per cent of the land was left untouched, with spider monkeys still living in it. It holds one MICHELIN Key. Formerly Boca de Agua.
Couples who want nature, silence and the lagoon, and are happy to travel for them.
You want the Caribbean sea: the lagoon is fresh water, and the beaches are an hour and a half away.
Take the sunrise kayak on the lagoon, and the sailing boat another day to the cenotes and islands; Cenote Azul is a quarter of an hour by road.
The rooms
Twenty-two suites in raised treehouses, according to the Guide: the Jungle Treehouse (45 m²), the Master Pool Treehouse (75 m²) with a private plunge pool, and the Two-Bedroom Pool Treehouse (90 m²). Furniture is made from recycled local wood, and double-height windows open on every side.
The setting
On the western shore of the Lagoon of Seven Colours, fed by underground springs and home to living stromatolites, with mangroves along its edge. Bacalar town, with its 18th-century Spanish fort, is about 15 minutes away. The resort has a pier, a rooftop over the lagoon and a pool tiled in green.
The food
Flora, the restaurant and bar, cooks the food of the Mexican southeast with the Lebanese influence that runs through Yucatán, from local produce, with vegetarian and vegan dishes. It is open to non-guests.
Getting there
About 30 minutes from Chetumal airport, two and a half hours from Tulum's and four and a half from Cancún's. A car is useful.
Good to know
Massages, jungle walks through the property, mezcal tastings and cultural tours of Bacalar are on offer. The hotel treats its own wastewater and works on mangrove restoration and spider monkey protection. Namron Hospitality has announced that the property will reopen as La Valise Bacalar on 15 December 2026, keeping Escobedo's architecture; the hotel's own website and Booking.com already use the new name.
