MICHELIN Key hotels in Mexico: the 2026 selection, region by region
The short answer

Mexico has 98 hotels with a MICHELIN Key in the 2026 selection: three with three Keys, twenty-one with two and seventy-four with one, against 89 in 2025. The three-Key hotels are Hotel Esencia on the Riviera Maya, One&Only Mandarina in Nayarit and Xinalani near Puerto Vallarta. Quintana Roo has the most Keys (22), followed by Mexico City (18, the most of any city), Los Cabos and the Pacific coast (14 each). We rate eight of the 98: Hotel Esencia, Casa Polanco, Chablé Yucatán, Maroma, Campos Polanco, La Valise, Hotel Sevilla and La Valise Bacalar.

The MICHELIN Key is the Guide's award for hotels, from one to three, judged on architecture and interior design, service, personality, value for money and what the hotel gives back to its surroundings. It says nothing about the restaurant, and nothing about size or price.

The 2026 selection for Mexico, published in late September, has 98 hotels with a Key: three with three, twenty-one with two and seventy-four with one. A year earlier there were 89. Twelve hotels came in — among them Rosewood San Miguel de Allende, straight in with two Keys, and Hotel Sevilla in Mérida with one — and three lost the Key they held: Hotel Humano and Hotel Terrestre in Puerto Escondido, and Our Habitas San Miguel. No hotel moved between two and three Keys.

Where the 98 Keys are

The Guide lists its hotels one by one; this is the count by region, from its own index on 30 September 2026. The coasts hold most of the two- and three-Key hotels, and the cities most of the single Keys.

The three hotels with three Keys

Two of the three are on the Pacific, within about an hour and a half of Puerto Vallarta: One&Only Mandarina, 105 treehouses and cliff villas in the coastal rainforest at Lo de Marcos, in Nayarit, and Xinalani, a retreat of 33 rooms south of Puerto Vallarta that is reached by boat. The third is on the Caribbean: Hotel Esencia, the house an Italian duchess built for herself on the bay of Xpu-Há, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum, now 47 suites and four villas on a 50-acre estate with a semi-private beach where sea turtles nest. It is the only one of the three we rate.

Twenty-one hotels with two Keys

Seven of them stand on the Los Cabos corridor, the densest cluster in the country, and all seven are large resorts of 56 to 174 rooms. Mexico City and Yucatán have one each, both of them in our guide.

The eight Key hotels we rate

We rate eight of the 98, in the three parts of Mexico we cover so far: Mexico City, Yucatán and the Mexican Caribbean, and Oaxaca, where none of our hotels holds a Key this year.

Mexico City: eighteen Keys, almost all of them small houses

No city in Mexico has more Key hotels than the capital, and none of them is a palace. Apart from the Sofitel on Reforma, with 275 rooms, the eighteen go from four rooms to forty-nine: townhouses, guest houses and converted apartment buildings, most of them in Polanco, Roma and Condesa. Only Casa Polanco holds two. Campos Polanco, twelve suites with a shared kitchen on every floor, and La Valise, eight suites in Roma Norte, hold one each.

Yucatán and the Caribbean: haciendas, a duchess's house and treehouses

In Yucatán the Key goes mostly to small houses in Mérida's old centre — seven of the state's eight — and once to a hacienda: Chablé Yucatán, forty casitas in the forest of Chocholá with a spa built beside a cenote. Hotel Sevilla, a 16th-century casona that Grupo Habita reopened in 2025 with 21 rooms, won its first Key in 2026.

On the Caribbean, the Keys cluster around Playa del Carmen and Mayakoba. Our three are Esencia, Maroma — the first hotel on the Riviera Maya, redesigned in 2023 — and, far down the peninsula towards Belize, La Valise Bacalar, timber treehouses by Frida Escobedo on the shore of Bacalar's lagoon.

Selected by the Guide without a Key

The Guide also selects hotels it does not give a Key to; Mexico has 123 of them on its site. Seven are in our guide, and several are among the hotels we would book first: in Oaxaca, Otro Oaxaca, Casa Antonieta and Escondido Oaxaca, and on the coast Casa TO and Hotel Terrestre, which lost its Key in 2026; Círculo Mexicano behind the Cathedral in Mexico City; and Casona Los Cedros in Espita, Yucatán. Oaxaca as a whole went from seven Key hotels to five this year, and Puerto Escondido from three to one.

How to use the Key in Mexico

The Key reads differently on the coast and in the cities. On the coast it mostly marks large, complete resorts — Los Cabos and Mayakoba above all — where you will rarely leave the property. In Mexico City, Mérida and Oaxaca it marks houses of a few rooms, where the city is the point and breakfast is the only meal you will take in.

So choose the trip first — beach week, city on foot, haciendas and ruins — and use the Key to shortlist within it. Our regional guides compare each hotel's size, setting and compromises.

How we built this page

The Keys and the counts are those of the MICHELIN Guide's 2026 selection for Mexico, read from the Guide's own hotel index on 30 September 2026 and compared with its 2025 list of 89. Room counts for hotels we rate come from each hotel's own site where it differs from the Guide. Every hotel we rate is scored on the Unlisted Index. Inclusion is editorial and never paid. Availability links may be affiliate links, which can earn The Unlisted a commission without changing your price.

Frequently asked questions

How many hotels in Mexico have a MICHELIN Key?

98 in the 2026 selection: three with three Keys, twenty-one with two and seventy-four with one. In 2025 there were 89.

Which hotels in Mexico have three MICHELIN Keys?

Three: Hotel Esencia at Xpu-Há on the Riviera Maya, One&Only Mandarina at Lo de Marcos in Nayarit, and Xinalani near Puerto Vallarta, in Jalisco.

Which city in Mexico has the most MICHELIN Key hotels?

Mexico City, with 18: one with two Keys, Casa Polanco, and seventeen with one. By state, Quintana Roo has more (22), spread between Cancún, the Riviera Maya, Tulum, Holbox and Bacalar.

Which Mexican hotels won a Key in 2026?

Twelve, among them Rosewood San Miguel de Allende with two Keys, and Hotel Sevilla in Mérida, NIZUC in Cancún, St. Regis Punta Mita and Casa Las Tortugas on Holbox with one. Three hotels lost theirs: Hotel Humano and Hotel Terrestre in Puerto Escondido, and Our Habitas San Miguel.

Is a MICHELIN Key the same as a MICHELIN star?

No. Stars are for restaurants; Keys are for hotels and judge the whole stay — architecture, service, character, value and the hotel's place in its surroundings. A Key hotel need not have a starred restaurant.
