The verdict
A neocolonial mansion from the 1940s, with a carved stone doorway and wrought-iron windows, and a modernist wing beside it, across the road from Parque Lincoln in Polanco. The house had been used as offices before a four-year restoration led by Claudio Gantous, with interiors by CASA M+M, turned it into 19 rooms and suites that feel like a private home. It holds two MICHELIN Keys, the only hotel in Mexico City with more than one.
A quiet, polished base in Polanco, within walking distance of the museums and the city's best restaurants.
You want the energy of Roma or the Centro at the door: Polanco is leafy, residential and calm after dark.
Take afternoon tea on the Veranda, served from half past four, and ask for a Park View room or the Lincoln Suite, whose terrace looks straight over the park.
The rooms
Nineteen rooms and suites in eight categories, from the Deluxe rooms to the Lincoln Suite with its large private terrace over the park. Walnut floors, textiles made for the house, Egyptian cotton, marble bathrooms, and a different palette on each floor; the Anatole Suite keeps the mansion's original details.
The setting
On Luis G. Urbina, a quiet street facing Parque Lincoln, in Polanco, the smartest of the city's colonias — neighbourhoods. The Museo Soumaya, the Museo Jumex and Chapultepec Park, with the Museo Tamayo and the National Museum of Anthropology, are all within reach on foot or by a short ride.
The food
Veranda, in the inner courtyard, serves breakfast, afternoon tea, lunch and dinner to hotel guests and their companions only; it is not open to the public. The Library and Honors Bar, with its fireplace, works on trust, and Polanco's restaurants are a short walk away.
Getting there
About 30 to 45 minutes by car from Mexico City's international airport (MEX), depending on traffic. The hotel arranges transfers.
Good to know
There is a spa and a gym; a personal trainer or a yoga or Pilates teacher can be booked. The art on the walls includes work by Graciela Iturbide and Ricardo Mazal. Rooms are non-smoking and pets are not accepted.
