Polanco for calm, parks, museums and the city's finest restaurants; Roma Norte or Condesa for cafés, galleries and walking; the Centro Histórico for the Zócalo, the Templo Mayor and the murals, at the price of busier, emptier streets at night. On foot within a colonia, and by app for everything else: Uber, DiDi and Cabify work well and are inexpensive. Avoid hailing taxis in the street. The Metro is fast but very crowded at rush hour. Traffic is heavy, so allow 30 to 45 minutes between Polanco and the Centro.
Four days is a good first visit: one for the Centro Histórico, one for Chapultepec and the Museum of Anthropology, one for Roma and Condesa, and one for a day trip. With a week, add Coyoacán, Xochimilco and a slower pace.
Teotihuacan, the city of the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon, about 50 kilometres north-east — an hour by car if you leave early; go on a weekday. Puebla and Cholula are about two hours east, and Taxco, the silver town, about two and a half hours south.
