The verdict

A 19th-century house on República de Guatemala, a block behind the Metropolitan Cathedral, where the photographer Manuel Álvarez Bravo was born in 1902; his pictures hang throughout. Grupo Habita opened it in 2020 as 25 rooms around a central patio, reworked by the architects Ambrosi Etchegaray in white stone and pale pine, with a rooftop pool and bar facing the Cathedral's domes. It is in the MICHELIN Guide, without a Key.

Best for

Walking the Centro Histórico — the Zócalo, the Templo Mayor, the murals — and swimming on the roof afterwards.

Skip if

You want quiet streets at night or a polished, attentive service: the Centro is busy and the hotel is relaxed rather than formal.

Insider tip

Go up to the rooftop at sunset, when the Cathedral's towers catch the last light, and ask for a room with a balcony towards them.

The rooms

Twenty-five rooms and suites on the second and third floors, in six categories from Superior Rooms to a Top Suite. Most open onto small skylit patios; a few have balconies towards the Cathedral. The style is spare, almost Shaker, with Oaxacan textiles and furniture by the local studio La Metropolitana.

The setting

At República de Guatemala 20, in the Centro Histórico, a few minutes on foot from the Zócalo, the Templo Mayor and the Palacio Nacional. The ground floor is a small marketplace with a barber and a fashion boutique, and the rooftop has a pool, a bar and views over the old city.

The food

Comedor Mexicano, on the ground floor, cooks Mexican dishes through the day; the rooftop bar pours organic wines, mezcals and traditional drinks. The Centro's old cantinas — bars that serve food with the drinks — and markets are within a few streets.

Getting there

About 20 to 30 minutes by car from Mexico City's international airport (MEX), the shortest transfer of any of our hotels in the city.

Good to know

The hotel lends bicycles and offers valet parking. The Centro empties late in the evening; take an app taxi back after dinner in Roma or Polanco.
