The verdict

A casona — a colonial town mansion — built in the 16th century a few streets from Mérida's cathedral, left to ruin and reopened by Grupo Habita in 2025 with 21 rooms. The architects Zeller & Moye kept the eroded walls, the broken marble and the plants that had taken over the patios, and set concrete and brass against them: a pool split in two by a wall, a spa with a cave-like cold plunge. It entered the MICHELIN Guide in 2026 with one Key.

Best for

Two or three nights in Mérida, walking to the plaza, the markets and dinner.

Skip if

You want a resort: the rooms look inward to the patios, and the city is outside the door.

Insider tip

Ask for a room on the pool patio, the old stable yard at the back, and keep the late afternoon for the pool, when the heat of the street is at its worst.

The rooms

Twenty-one rooms and suites of 21 to 70 m², most opening straight onto the courtyards, some with soaring ceilings and stone walls left raw. The Historic Patio Corner Suite has a hammock and looks over the patio or the historic centre.

The setting

On Calle 62 in the historic centre, near the Plaza Grande. The hotel turns inward to two joined courtyards: the colonnaded main patio with the restaurant, and the smaller one with the pool, which recalls the water tanks of the Yucatán haciendas. The street-facing rooms are now shops.

The food

The Bistrót, in the main patio and on the first floor, serves a local breakfast and an all-day menu with international touches; the bar is upstairs, and drinks are served by the pool.

Getting there

Mérida airport is under half an hour by car. The centre is walkable; a car is only needed for the haciendas and the ruins.

Good to know

There is a small spa with a sauna, a cold plunge and massages. Grupo Habita also runs design hotels in Mexico City and on the Oaxaca coast.
