The verdict
The first hotel on the Riviera Maya, grown from a house the Mexican architect José Luis Moreno built for himself on an old coconut plantation after he first came here in 1976, drawing his plans in the sand. Belmond had it redesigned in 2023 by Tara Bernerd & Partners, with more than 700,000 tiles hand-painted in Jalisco by the ceramicist José Noé Suro. It has 72 rooms, suites and villas facing the reef, and two MICHELIN Keys.
A classic beach holiday with good cooking and short transfers.
You want something small and wild: it is a full resort, and the coast either side is built up.
Book one of the oceanfront suites with a plunge pool, and eat at Woodend on the first night, when the fire is lit and the beach is empty.
The rooms
Nineteen rooms, 50 suites and three villas, most looking over the sea, in white stucco with hand-made tiles, beams and furniture crafted by artisans from across Mexico. Some suites have plunge pools on their terraces.
The setting
On a long white beach at Punta Maroma, facing the Mesoamerican reef, the world's second largest, between Cancún and Playa del Carmen. Gardens, pools and thatched roofs run between the buildings.
The food
Woodend by Curtis Stone cooks over live fire on the beach; Casa Mayor reinvents regional Mexican food; Bambuco is the cocktail bar, and Freddy's Beach Bar keeps things casual.
Getting there
Thirty minutes by car from Cancún airport, 20 from Playa del Carmen and an hour from Tulum.
Good to know
Maroma Spa by Guerlain has a temazcal and an apothecary using native ingredients. The hotel organises snorkelling on the reef.
