Yucatán: good to know

Mérida or the Caribbean coast?

Mérida and the haciendas for architecture, cenotes and food; the Caribbean coast for the sea. With a week or more, split it: fly into Mérida and out of Cancún, or the other way round.

Do you need a car in Yucatán?

It helps inland, where the haciendas, cenotes and ruins are spread out, and the roads are straight and quiet. On the coast, most of these hotels arrange transfers from Cancún or Tulum airport.

When is sargassum a problem on the Caribbean coast?

Mostly in the warm months, roughly spring to early autumn. Winter is usually clear, and inland Yucatán is not affected.
