The verdict
A 17th-century house in the centre of Palafrugell that was the Mascort family's pharmacy from 1789, restored with ecological building methods into fifteen quiet rooms, a private hot pool under stone vaults and a roof terrace over the town. It holds a MICHELIN Key and is one of the best-value Key hotels on the coast, ten minutes from the coves of Calella, Llafranc and Tamariu.
Couples who want a real town with shops and restaurants on foot, and three of the Costa Brava's prettiest coves a short drive away.
You want a garden, an outdoor pool or a sea view: it is a townhouse in a working market town.
Go to Calella or Tamariu early, and keep the caldarium — the hot pool under the vaults — for the late afternoon; ask at reception how to reserve it.
The rooms
Fifteen rooms in four categories — standard, superior, junior suite and family — each laid out differently, with natural linen, recycled textiles, fine carpentry and, in several, original vaulted or painted ceilings.
The setting
In the historic centre of Palafrugell, the market town inland from Calella de Palafrugell, Llafranc and Tamariu, all about four kilometres away. The old pharmacy survives on the ground floor as La Botica, a shop of natural products.
The food
An organic breakfast is served in the former apothecary's laboratory. For lunch and dinner, Palafrugell's squares are on the doorstep and the fish restaurants of Calella and Llafranc are ten minutes away.
Getting there
About 45 minutes from Girona airport and 1 hour 30 minutes from Barcelona. The town works on foot; for the coves you need a car, a taxi or the summer bus.
Good to know
Officially a three-star, and a MICHELIN Key on merit. The wellness area has a caldarium — a private, chlorine-free hot pool — and there is a sun terrace on the roof. Family rooms are available.
