The verdict

A grand house of the 1960s on the slope above Sa Riera beach, where politicians, artists and people from film and theatre gathered in the 1960s and 70s, reopened in April 2025 as a 38-room hotel for adults after a twelve-million-euro restoration by GCA Architects. Terracotta floors, lime-washed walls and local ceramics recall the old houses of Cadaqués and Llafranc, and the restaurant is Jordi Vilà's. It holds one MICHELIN Key, the only one in Begur.

Best for

Couples who want Begur's coves with a beach below the hotel, a saltwater pool and a serious dinner without driving.

Skip if

You are travelling with children (it takes guests from 18) or want to walk to the bars of Begur village, which is a short drive up the hill.

Insider tip

Ask for a room with a terrace facing the bay, and book AlKostat del Mar for the first night: the rice dishes are the reason to eat in.

The rooms

Thirty-eight rooms and suites with terracotta floors, lime-washed walls and hand-thrown ceramics; depending on the category they add a private terrace, an outdoor shower or a plunge pool. The upper rooms look over the pines to Sa Riera bay.

The setting

On Carrer del Mar, just above Sa Riera, the broadest beach in Begur, on the north side of the town towards Illa Roja and Pals. The estate keeps its stone arcades and terraces, and the pool runs off the lobby.

The food

AlKostat del Mar, led by the chef Jordi Vilà, is laid out around an open courtyard under stone arches and cooks Catalan dishes with a lighter touch: senyoret rice from the Empordà and Girona, and fish and meat from the grill. It is listed in the MICHELIN Guide. There is a second restaurant and a bar by the pool.

Getting there

About 45 minutes from Girona–Costa Brava airport and around 1 hour 45 minutes from Barcelona. A car is useful for the other coves and the medieval villages; there is valet parking.

Good to know

Adults only, from 18, and no pets. The spa has hydrotherapy and treatment rooms, and the hotel is a member of Design Hotels, so Marriott Bonvoy points apply. Confirm winter opening dates directly with the hotel.
