The verdict
In 1326 Henry, Count of Tyrol, founded a Carthusian monastery at about 1,327 m in the Schnalstal. After it was dissolved in 1782, farmers and merchants bought the buildings and made a village inside it, Karthaus, where Stefania and Paul Grüner now run the Goldene Rose: twenty-nine rooms, eight residence suites 150 m away, a spa with a glass pavilion and a fire, and a six-course menu of silence inspired by the monks. One MICHELIN Key.
Walkers in summer and skiers in winter who want a small, thoughtful house and a village with a story.
You want a big resort or a lake: this is a small village in a narrow high valley, closed from early November to late December and from late March to May.
Spend a night in the hotel's customs house at the Bella Vista refuge, at 2,845 m, and walk the Via Monachorum, the silence trail that starts at the door.
The rooms
Twenty-nine rooms in six categories from about 25 to 68 m², the Penthouse and Junior Suites with their own saunas, and eight residence suites with tea kitchens in the Residence Weißkugel, 150 m away.
The setting
In Karthaus (Certosa), at about 1,327 m in the Schnalstal (Val Senales), a side valley west of Merano; a ski bus runs up to the Schnalstal glacier.
