The verdict
Twenty-five rooms in a building by the Milan-based architect Peter Pichler, who took the shape of the roofs and peaks around Meransen and gave it dark larch cladding, asymmetric gables and round openings cut into the balconies. Inside it is pale ash and green wool; outside, the Gitschberg Jochtal slopes and the Dolomites across the valley. A four-star family hotel with a spa, and one MICHELIN Key.
Design lovers on a reasonable budget, and a quiet ski area rather than a famous one.
You want the big circuits: the Sella Ronda is more than an hour away, and Meransen is a small plateau village.
Ask for a room with one of the round openings on the balcony, and swim at dusk in the pool facing the valley.
The rooms
Twenty-five rooms and suites, from 34 m² doubles to suites with a mountain view, in ash, dark timber and wool.
The setting
On the sunny plateau of Meransen, at about 1,400 m above Mühlbach, where the Val Pusteria begins, with the Gitschberg Jochtal ski area, part of Dolomiti Superski, and the Dolomites across the valley.
The food
South Tyrolean cooking from local produce for hotel guests.
Getting there
About 25 minutes by car from Brixen station and an hour from Bolzano.
Good to know
The spa has a pool facing the valley and a sauna with an arched window onto the meadows.
