The verdict
The Canfranc International Station, opened in 1928 to link Spain and France under the Pyrenees, is a building of about 240 metres in the bottom of a mountain valley, and since January 2023 it has been a hotel of 104 rooms. The halls keep their scale and their light; the rooms recall the early twentieth century with modern comfort; and one of the old carriages on the platform is Canfranc Express, with one MICHELIN Star. It holds two MICHELIN Keys, and nothing else in Spain feels like it.
A winter weekend with skiing at Candanchú or Astún by day and a building that is the destination by night.
You want a small, personal hotel: this is a large property in a very large building, and service runs at that scale.
Check which restaurants are open on your dates: Canfranc Express closes from 1 November to 13 December, and 1928 from 1 November to 2 December.
The rooms
One hundred and four rooms and suites along the length of the station, designed to recall the period of the building, with the mountains of the valley outside the windows.
The setting
In the valley of the Aragón river at Canfranc, a few kilometres below the French border, with walls of rock on every side. The station was designed by Fernando Ramírez Dampierre and declared a Site of Cultural Interest in 2002; the line to France stopped in 1970 after the collapse of the L'Estanguet bridge.
The food
Canfranc Express, in a restored railway carriage, holds one MICHELIN Star under the chef Eduardo Salanova and opens for lunch from Wednesday to Saturday. 1928 serves Franco-Spanish tasting menus at dinner, El Internacional occupies the ground floor of the old Hotel Internacional, and there is a café and a cocktail bar, La Biblioteca.
Getting there
By car through the Pyrenean valleys from Huesca or Pamplona, or by train: the Zaragoza–Huesca–Canfranc line has run again since June 2025, with a couple of trains a day. Candanchú is 7 km away and Astún 10 km.
Good to know
There is a spa with a heated indoor pool, a relaxation area and a gym. Breakfast and parking are charged separately.
