The verdict
A 12th-century castle in the heart of Chianti, restored by COMO into a polished country-house hotel of around 50 rooms — frescoed ceilings and contemporary comfort, a Michelin-starred restaurant (La Torre), a COMO Shambhala spa and a big pool over the vineyards. It's more refined resort than rustic hideaway, but the setting between Florence and Siena, and the food and spa, make it a very easy Chianti base.

The rooms
Around 50 rooms and suites split between the frescoed 12th-century castle and converted estate buildings, in COMO's calm, contemporary style laid over the historic bones. Castle rooms have the most character; garden and vineyard views throughout.
The setting
On a hill at Tavarnelle Val di Pesa, right in the middle of Chianti between Florence and Siena, surrounded by vineyards and olive groves. Central for touring the wine region, with both cities under an hour away.
The food
La Torre is the Michelin-starred restaurant, contemporary Tuscan cooking in the old castle; there's also a more relaxed all-day option and a poolside bar. The wine list leans, naturally, into Chianti Classico.
Getting there
About 45 minutes from Florence airport and under an hour from Siena, just off the Florence–Siena superstrada. A car is the natural way to explore Chianti from here; parking on site.
