Ciutadella or Maó: the better Menorca base for your trip
Choose west or east by evening atmosphere, airport time, coves and hotel style—not by a misleadingly small island map.

Choose Ciutadella for the most atmospheric old town and western coves; choose Maó and the east for the harbour, shorter airport transfer and design fincas. Book Faustino Gran for town life, Son Vell for a western estate, Torralbenc for vineyard design or Sant Joan de Binissaida for a quiet eastern finca.
Menorca can be crossed in roughly an hour, which tempts first-time visitors to treat every hotel as equally placed. Daily beach traffic, dinner plans and dark rural roads make the base more important than the map suggests. The west is anchored by Ciutadella; the east by Maó, its harbour and the airport.
Ciutadella and the west
Ciutadella has the stronger evening atmosphere: palace streets, the cathedral and a harbour lined with restaurants. Faustino Gran lets you live it on foot. Outside town, Son Vell turns the west into a country-estate trip with the hotel as a destination and the southern coves within reach by car.
Maó and the east
Maó is less theatrical but more practical: airport, harbour and the villages of Sant Lluís and Es Castell are close. Torralbenc is the polished design-and-vineyard choice near Alaior. Sant Joan de Binissaida is smaller, greener and well placed for the harbour side of the island.
One base or two?
