The most romantic escapes in Spain: where to go for two
The short answer

In short: Spain's most romantic escapes run from the white town of Ronda and the Alhambra in Granada to the medieval Empordà, the mountain village of Deià in Mallorca, the wild Costa de la Luz around Vejer, San Sebastián and Seville. For two, choose a small, characterful hotel — an adults-only masia, a clifftop manor or a hidden country house — and travel in spring or autumn.

Romance, for us, isn't about heart-shaped anything. It's about a place that slows you both down: a candlelit dinner in a courtyard, a clifftop terrace at golden hour, a village where the only plan is a long lunch and a longer walk. Spain does this better than almost anywhere — and beyond the obvious city breaks, it hides a whole country of quiet, characterful corners made for two. Here are the escapes our editors send couples to, with where to stay in each.

Ronda and the white towns of Andalusia

Few places are as instantly romantic as Ronda — a town split in two by a 100-metre gorge, with the Puente Nuevo bridge spanning the drop and the Tajo falling away beneath your feet. Stay for the evening, when the day-trippers leave and the bridge glows gold, and walk the cliff-edge paths at sunset. Around it, the pueblos blancos — Grazalema, Setenil de las Bodegas, Zahara — string through the mountains like something from another century.

It pairs beautifully with the coast: Ronda is about an hour inland from the Costa del Sol, so many couples combine a few nights by the sea with a night up in the mountains.

Granada and the Alhambra

Granada is romance with the volume turned up: the Alhambra, the most beautiful palace complex in Europe, glowing above a city of Moorish gardens, tea houses and flamenco caves. Book the Alhambra's Nasrid Palaces for an evening visit, when the courtyards are quiet and lamplit, then watch the whole thing turn rose-gold from the Mirador de San Nicolás in the Albaicín as the sun drops behind the Sierra Nevada.

It's a short, intense city escape — two or three nights is plenty — and it combines naturally with the white towns and the coast for a longer Andalusian loop.

The Empordà: medieval villages and farmhouse calm

If your idea of romance is a restored stone farmhouse, a private plunge pool and a dinner that came out of the garden, the Baix Empordà on the Costa Brava is hard to beat. Inland from the coves, a string of honey-stone medieval villages — Peratallada, Pals, Monells — sit among fields and vineyards, with a generation of adults-only masia hotels hidden among them.

Mas Generós is the most personal — the adults-only home of a forager-chef, where dinner is largely from the garden — while Encís d'Empordà is seven rooms of pure romantic calm in a restored masia near La Bisbal. Both are made for two; see our guide to the Empordà for food lovers for the long lunches in between.

Deià and the Serra de Tramuntana, Mallorca

Mallorca's romance lives in the mountains, not the resorts. Deià — a honey-stone village clinging to the Serra de Tramuntana above the sea, long beloved of artists and writers — is one of the Mediterranean's great romantic addresses. Olive terraces, a hidden cove for swimming, and dinners with the mountains falling to the water.

Belmond La Residencia is the definitive stay, two 16th-century manor houses among the olive groves with a Michelin-starred restaurant; for something more remote and wellness-led, Finca Ratxó is an adults-only mountain hideaway above Puigpunyent. See our guide to adults-only Mallorca for more.

Vejer and the Costa de la Luz

For a wilder, quieter romance, cross to Andalusia's Atlantic side. Vejer de la Frontera is a white town tumbling over a hilltop in the Cádiz countryside — all narrow lanes, jasmine and rooftop bars — with a surprisingly good food scene and the empty beaches of the Costa de la Luz a short drive away, where the Atlantic wind keeps the crowds thin even in August.

Out in the countryside, Casa La Siesta is the romantic base — a tiny, much-loved rural hotel built by its owners, adults-leaning, with a handful of shabby-chic rooms around a pool and gardens. It's the kind of place you book for an anniversary and never quite want to leave.

San Sebastián and the Basque coast

If romance, for you, runs through the stomach, San Sebastián is the trip. The most beautiful city beach in Spain — the shell-shaped Concha bay — curves below a town that holds more Michelin stars per head than almost anywhere on earth, and a pintxos scene that turns every evening into a slow crawl from bar to bar with a glass of txakoli in hand.

Walk up Monte Igueldo for the bay at sunset, and base a couple of nights here before exploring the wider Basque coast — the fishing town of Getaria, the cliffs of Zumaia — at your own pace.

Seville for a city romance

For pure, warm, walkable romance, few cities beat Seville. Lose an afternoon in the Real Alcázar's gardens, get happily lost in the Santa Cruz quarter, cross the river to Triana for flamenco, and watch the Plaza de España glow at golden hour. In spring the orange blossom scents the whole city; on a warm night, a horse-drawn carriage or a rooftop drink over the cathedral does the rest.

Two or three nights is ideal, and Seville links by fast train to Córdoba and Madrid if you want to string a longer trip together.

Wine country: La Rioja and the Empordà

A vineyard escape is one of the most quietly romantic trips of all — slow mornings, long tastings, dinners among the vines. La Rioja, in the north, is Spain's most famous wine region, with striking modern bodegas (some by star architects) set among medieval villages like Laguardia. Closer to the coast, the small DO Empordà behind the Costa Brava pairs characterful wines with the medieval villages and great tables of the Empordà.

Either makes a beautiful two- or three-night add-on, especially around the September harvest, when the vines turn and the cellars are at their most alive.

How to plan a romantic trip to Spain

Two rules make a Spanish escape feel romantic rather than rushed. First, go small: a seven-room masia, a clifftop manor or an owner-run country house beats a big resort every time for two. Many of the most romantic stays are adults-only or adults-leaning, which keeps them blissfully quiet. Second, don't over-plan the map — pick one or two bases, leave the car for day trips, and protect time for the long lunch and the aimless evening walk.

On timing, late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October) are the sweet spot almost everywhere — warm, golden and far calmer than high summer. For the cities and the south, spring brings the orange blossom; for wine country, the September harvest. Whatever you choose, book the headline dinners and any special rooms well ahead.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the most romantic place in Spain?

Where should couples stay in Spain?

Choose small over large: adults-only masias like Mas Generós and Encís d'Empordà in the Empordà, the clifftop Belmond La Residencia or the remote Finca Ratxó in Mallorca, and the owner-built Casa La Siesta near Vejer on the Costa de la Luz are all made for two.

When is the best time for a romantic trip to Spain?

Late spring (May–June) and early autumn (September–October): warm, golden and far calmer than high summer. Spring brings the orange blossom to the southern cities; September is harvest time in the wine regions.
