The verdict

Ten rooms in a 17th-century convent house twenty metres from the Mezquita, holding more than a hundred Roman and Hispano-Muslim carved pieces on its walls and in its courtyards. It is closer to a small archaeological museum you can sleep in than to a hotel, and the roof looks straight at the cathedral.

Best for

A short, atmospheric Córdoba stay where walking out of the door puts you at the Mezquita in thirty seconds.

Skip if

You want a pool, a spa or a restaurant, or you find historic-house rooms small.

Insider tip

Suites 6 and 10 have their own terraces, which in a house with ten rooms and one shared roof is the difference between a good stay and a memorable one.

The rooms

Ten rooms over two floors, arranged around three courtyards paved in Córdoban tile. The decoration is calm and slightly traditional rather than designed — the building and the stonework are the character here, not the furniture. Two suites have private terraces.

The setting

Calle Encarnación, inside the Judería and twenty metres from the Mezquita-Catedral, on a lane that empties completely once the day visitors leave. The house was part of the Church of the Encarnación, and its collection of Roman and Hispano-Muslim pieces was restored with the Junta de Andalucía's archaeology department.

The food

Breakfast in the courtyard, and that is the extent of it — there is no restaurant. In this location that is not much of a loss, but plan dinners rather than assume you will eat in.

Getting there

Ten minutes by taxi from the station, and then a short walk: the Judería's lanes are pedestrian and narrow. Trains make Córdoba an easy stop between Madrid and Seville without a car.

Good to know

Four stars, ten rooms, no pool and no lift in parts of the house — this is a historic building and it behaves like one. The rooftop is shared and small, and in May, during the Patios festival, the whole quarter is full.
