The verdict

A 16th-century palace whose main courtyard has a glass floor over the Roman villa four and a half metres below — you walk across two thousand years on the way to breakfast. Fifty-three rooms around four Andalusian courtyards, with gardens, a pool and the best kitchen of the two Córdoba stays.

Best for

Travellers who want the full hotel — gardens, pool, spa, a serious restaurant — inside a genuinely historic building.

Skip if

You want to be next to the Mezquita; this is in the upper old town, a fifteen-minute walk away.

Insider tip

Ask for a room off one of the rear courtyards. The frescoed rooms photograph best but the quiet ones are at the back, away from the main patio where breakfast and events happen.

The rooms

Fifty-three rooms and suites around four courtyards, mixing hand-painted stucco and centuries-old frescoes with resolutely modern furniture. Categories vary enormously — some are conventional, a few are extraordinary — so the room number matters more here than the category name.

The setting

The Plaza de Don Gome, in the upper historic centre, a quarter that is residential rather than touristic. The Mezquita and the Judería are a fifteen-minute walk downhill; the Plaza de la Corredera is much closer. Under it all lies the Roman domus, excavated and left visible.

The food

Arbequina is the hotel restaurant and it is a reason to stay in rather than walk out, working Andalusian produce in the courtyard through the warm months. There is also a Bodyna spa in the vaults.

Getting there

Five minutes by taxi from Córdoba station, which puts Madrid at under two hours and Seville at forty-five minutes by AVE. A car is unnecessary and the old town is hard to drive in; use the hotel's parking if you have one.

Good to know

It is a five-star Design Hotels member with a MICHELIN Key, and it hosts weddings and events, which the main courtyard feels on a Saturday. Córdoba in July and August regularly passes 40 °C, and the courtyards, however beautiful, are not air-conditioned.
