Casares, Spain

The verdict
Widely rated one of Spain's finest resorts — a vast Andalusian-style estate above Casares, between Marbella and Sotogrande, with some of the largest suites in the country (from 50m²), a championship golf course that hosted the 2023 Solheim Cup, a destination spa and a beach club on the sea. Grand, spacious and impeccably run.
Travellers who want space, privacy and resort polish — golf, spa, big suites and a beach club — at the very top end.
You want a small boutique or to walk straight onto the sand from your room — it's a large inland estate with a separate beach club.
Even the entry-level suites are huge — book one with a terrace, lunch at the beach club, and dinner at the signature restaurant.
The rooms
Just 67 suites despite the estate's scale, from around 50m² up to 200m² with lofty 4-metre ceilings, plus private villas; restful interiors in warm neutral tones, many with terraces over the gardens, golf or the sea. Among the largest standard rooms in Spain.
The setting
A 215-hectare estate on the hills above Casares, near the Málaga–Cádiz border between Marbella and Sotogrande, with formal gardens, two outdoor pools (one heated year-round), a Cabell Robinson-designed 18-hole golf course — host of the 2023 Solheim Cup and three Volvo World Match Play Championships — and a seasonal beach club with a 35-metre infinity pool a short drive away.
The food
Several restaurants span Mediterranean, Spanish and Japanese-influenced cooking — the signature REI by Finca Cortesín, the garden-set El Jardín de Lutz and the Italian Don Giovanni among them — backed by a deep cellar. Dining is a serious part of the experience.
Getting there
About 40 minutes from Málaga airport and 20 from Sotogrande and Estepona; Gibraltar is around 40 minutes. A car is recommended for the coast and golf; ample parking and EV charging on site.
Good to know
A large, grand estate rather than an intimate boutique — strong for golf, spa and families wanting space, and a regular fixture on 'best hotels in Spain' lists. The beach club is seasonal and a short drive from the rooms.
