The verdict
A new five-star resort on the hills above La Alcaidesa, between Sotogrande and Gibraltar, with two golf courses of its own and views to the Rock and, on clear days, Africa. It holds a MICHELIN Key, and Dalmar, its main restaurant, is led by Benito Gómez, the chef of two-starred Bardal in Ronda. Large and polished rather than intimate, and one of the strongest openings on the coast.
Golf trips, families and couples who want space, sea views and a full resort at the quiet western end of the coast.
Your trip centres on Marbella or Málaga: it is about 40 minutes from Marbella and more than an hour from Málaga airport.
Fly into Gibraltar rather than Málaga if the timetable allows, and ask for a sea-facing room: the Rock at dusk is the reason to be here.
The rooms
About 150 rooms and suites and 47 villas, spacious and pale, in natural materials and soft tones, all with private terraces. Many look over the courses to the sea, and some villas have their own pool.
The setting
In San Roque, on the La Hacienda Links Golf Resort above the coast of La Alcaidesa, at the western end of the Costa del Sol in the province of Cádiz. The resort's Links and Heathland courses run towards the sea, and Sotogrande, Valderrama and the San Roque Club are a short drive away. The beach at La Alcaidesa is about a quarter of an hour on foot.
The food
Dalmar, the signature restaurant, cooks Andalusian produce under Benito Gómez and is recommended by the MICHELIN Guide. Several other restaurants and bars cover the pools and the seafront.
Getting there
About 25 minutes from Gibraltar airport and around 1 hour 15 minutes from Málaga. A car is useful; Sotogrande is about 15 minutes away.
Good to know
An 1,800 m² spa and several pools. It is a large resort with events and branded residences, so it is lively in summer. Families are welcome.
