The verdict
The former Byblos, the Costa del Sol's grand spa hotel since 1986, reborn as a white Andalusian village among the Mijas Golf courses, with 196 rooms, what it calls the coast's largest spa and a MICHELIN Key. Part of Hyatt's Unbound Collection. Strongest for golf, spa and families: this is a resort, not a boutique.
Golfers and spa-goers who want two Robert Trent Jones courses at the door and Málaga airport half an hour away.
You want the beach or a small hotel: it sits inland among golf courses, and the sea comes through the hotel's beach club.
Every room has a terrace, but the views differ: ask for one over the golf course or the mountains, and keep an afternoon for the spa.
The rooms
196 rooms and suites in pale, warm tones and natural textures, every one with a private terrace over the golf, the gardens or the mountains. Breakfast is included.
The setting
In Mijas Golf, inland from Fuengirola, in whitewashed buildings with blue-tiled roofs among cypresses and fountains. The Los Olivos and Los Lagos courses, both by Robert Trent Jones, are next door, and a dozen more lie within 15 minutes. The hotel runs a beach club, La Familia, on the coast.
The food
Four restaurants, from Andalusian and Mediterranean cooking to casual meals by the pool. Mijas Pueblo and Marbella are close for a dinner out.
Getting there
About 25–30 minutes from Málaga airport and 30 from Marbella. A car or taxis are needed for the coast.
Good to know
Three pools, a large spa, tennis, padel and yoga. There is a kids' club, so expect families in the school holidays. It is a big hotel that also hosts events and weddings.
