Spain in October: the month that splits in half
October is not one month in Spain, it is two. Until the 25th it is the end of summer, with a Mediterranean still at 19–23°C. That night the clocks go back and the sun sets before half past six. Book each half differently.

For the first half, the coast still works: Hostal de la Gavina or Hotel Aiguablava on the Costa Brava, Torralbenc in Menorca, Petunia Ibiza for the sunsets. From the middle of the month, move inland for the harvest: Terra Dominicata in the Priorat, Mas de Torrent in the Empordà. After the clocks change on 25 October, take a city: Palacio de Villapanés in Seville.
Most people book October as if it were a single month, and that is where the trip goes wrong. It is two. Until the last weekend it behaves like a late, gentler August: the Mediterranean is still between 19 and 23°C, terraces still work after dark, and the light holds until eight in the evening. Then, on the night of Saturday 25 October 2026, the clocks go back an hour and the whole thing changes shape.
The number that matters is the sunset. In Madrid the sun goes down at about 19:59 on 1 October and at about 18:15 on the 31st — and an hour of that disappears in a single night. A driving day in the last week of October is genuinely shorter than one in the first, which is the difference between a coastal trip and an inland one.

The three parts of October

| When | What it is like | Where it works | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1–12 October | The last of summer. Sea 19–23°C, sunset near 20:00 | The Mediterranean coast and the islands | The Pilar long weekend, 10–12 October |
| 13–24 October | The quiet fortnight. Warm days, cool nights, harvest on | Wine country, the Empordà, the coast midweek | Some beach services already closed |
| 25–31 October | Autumn. Clocks back, sunset about 18:15 | Cities you can walk, interiors, spas | Short daylight for driving |
1–12 October: the sea is still warm
This is the part of the year the Mediterranean gives back what it absorbed all summer. The Costa Brava sits at roughly 19–21°C and Menorca nearer 23°C — warmer than the air will be by the end of the month, and warm enough that swimming is a pleasure rather than a dare. In November the same water is down around 18°C, so this is the last real window.
Hostal de la Gavina is a 1932 grand-dame on the private peninsula of S'Agaró, with sea-facing suites, a saltwater pool above the rocks and a formality that is increasingly rare; it suits the reader who wants old-money Costa Brava rather than barefoot. Hotel Aiguablava is the opposite and a third of the price: a family-run clifftop classic over the cove of Fornells, kept by the same family for three generations, where the point is the view and the welcome rather than the design.
On the islands, Torralbenc is a restored 19th-century farmstead near Alaior set among its own vineyards above Menorca's south coast — the island's design benchmark, with a pool and about 27 rooms, though you do not step from your room onto a beach. Petunia Ibiza sits above Cala Carbó with an uninterrupted view of Es Vedrà and terraces built for the sunset, which in early October still arrives at a civilised hour.
If you would rather chase the heat on the Atlantic than the Mediterranean, where it is still summer in October covers Lanzarote, the Algarve and the Cádiz coast.

The Pilar long weekend: 10–12 October 2026
12 October, the Fiesta Nacional, falls on a Monday in 2026, which makes a clean three-day weekend from Saturday the 10th. In 2026 it is also the last long weekend that the whole country shares before December — 1 November lands on a Sunday, and only nine regions, Andalusia and Madrid among them, move it to Monday the 2nd — and it arrives while the coast is still swimmable, so the good hotels on the Costa Brava and the islands go early, and the AP-7 does what it does.
If you want that weekend inland instead, our long weekend between Girona and the Empordà is built for precisely those three days, with four country hotels and a Friday-to-Monday plan.
13–24 October: the quiet fortnight, and the harvest
These twelve days are the best value in the Spanish autumn and almost nobody books them deliberately. The Pilar crowd has gone home, the half-term traffic has not arrived, the weather is still generous and the rates drop. Midweek is close to having the place to yourself.
It is also when the inland harvest is finishing. Terra Dominicata is a former monastic farm estate beside the ruined charterhouse of Escaladei, restored into an adults-only wine hotel with its own cellar and olive groves under the cliffs of Montsant; the monks planted these slopes eight centuries ago, and the silence is the point. In the Empordà, Mas de Torrent is a 1751 farmhouse turned Relais & Châteaux retreat among cypresses and vineyards, ten minutes inland from the coast, with garden suites that have their own plunge pools and a spa that earns its keep as the evenings cool.
For the harvest as a trip in its own right, across the Priorat, the Douro and Montalcino, see where to stay for the grape harvest; our Priorat guide compares six hotels in the region.

25 October: the clocks go back, and the month changes
At three in the morning on Sunday 25 October 2026 the clocks on the mainland and in the Balearics go back to two; in the Canaries the shift happens an hour earlier. The EU still runs the change on the last Sunday of October, and Spain has been pushing to end it without a binding agreement so far — so for now it stands.
What it does to a trip is blunt. Sunset in Madrid moves from around 19:25 on the Saturday to around 18:23 on the Sunday, and by the 31st it is 18:15. The mountain roads of the Tramuntana, the Priorat and the Alpujarra stop being an afternoon's driving. Dinner outside stops being obvious. This is the week to stop planning around the car and start planning around a city you can cross on foot.
CoolRooms Palacio de Villapanés is a baroque palace built in 1729 for Admiral López-Pintado, protected since 2009 as one of Seville's principal 18th-century buildings, with fifty rooms around a courtyard and a roof terrace with a plunge pool and a clean line of sight to the Giralda. Fifty rooms is not intimate, but the rate is well below what the smaller casas palacio ask, and in late October a Seville rooftop is finally a pleasure rather than an endurance test.
Our guide to Seville, Córdoba and Granada in autumn sequences the three cities for exactly this stretch.

What October is not good for
Three things the month does badly, said plainly.
- A guaranteed beach holiday. Early October is usually generous and occasionally not: the first Atlantic storms arrive in the second half of the month, and one bad week can take the whole trip. The sea is reliable; the sky is not.
- Long driving itineraries in the last week. Once the clocks go back you lose the end of the afternoon, which is the part of the day mountain roads are worth seeing in.
- Beach infrastructure. Chiringuitos, boat services to island beaches and seasonal restaurants start closing from the middle of the month, even where the weather holds. Check before you count on one.
Planning an October trip in Spain
Book the Pilar weekend, 10–12 October, as early as you can: it is the one genuinely tight date in the month, and the coast is still in play. British and northern European half-term falls in the second half of the month and adds pressure to flights more than to hotels.
If your dates are flexible, take the quiet fortnight between the 13th and the 24th. It is the cheapest good fortnight of the Spanish autumn, and it is the last one before the clocks change.
And if you are choosing between this month and the next, Spain in November sets out what is left once the coast closes — which is more than most people expect.
How we selected these hotels
Every hotel here is one we rate on the public Unlisted Index, chosen because it fits a specific part of October rather than because it is good in July. The sunset times, the sea temperatures and the 2026 dates for the Pilar weekend and the clock change were all checked on 16 September 2026; climate figures are averages and any single October can run warmer or wetter.

Frequently asked questions
Is October a good time to visit Spain?
It is one of the best months, as long as you treat it as two. Until about the 25th the Mediterranean is still 19–23°C and the coast works; after the clocks go back the sun sets by 18:15 and the trip belongs in a city or inland. Rates and crowds are far below August in both halves.
Can you still swim in the sea in Spain in October?
Yes, on the Mediterranean. The Costa Brava sits at roughly 19–21°C in October and Menorca nearer 23°C. By November the same water is down around 18°C, so October is the last comfortable month for swimming outside the Canaries.
When do the clocks change in Spain in 2026?
On Sunday 25 October 2026. At 03:00 on the mainland and in the Balearics the clocks go back to 02:00; in the Canary Islands the change happens at 02:00, going back to 01:00. Sunset in Madrid drops from about 19:25 to about 18:23 overnight.
When is the Pilar long weekend in 2026?
12 October, the Fiesta Nacional, falls on a Monday in 2026, so the long weekend runs from Saturday the 10th to Monday the 12th. It is the busiest travel weekend of the Spanish autumn and the last one while the sea is still warm — book well ahead.
What is the quietest time to travel in Spain in October?
The fortnight between the 13th and the 24th. The Pilar weekend is over, half-term traffic has not built up, the weather is still good and rates fall. Midweek in that stretch is the best value of the Spanish autumn.
